North End: John T.
Kalange, DDS, MS provides orthodontic care in Boise, Idaho, serving patients seeking treatment for alignment and bite concerns. Dr. John T. Kalange holds a DDS and MS, indicating advanced training in orthodontics beyond general dental education. The practice addresses common orthodontic needs through evaluations and treatment planning for both adolescent and adult patients. Specific treatment modalities offered have not been detailed in available records, though orthodontic practices typically address malocclusion, spacing issues, and bite irregularities through various appliance options. Dr. Kalange's credentials reflect completion of a specialized orthodontic residency program, which requires additional years of study following dental school. The practice operates in the North End neighborhood of Boise, making it accessible to families and individuals in that area of the city. Patient feedback reflects a Google rating of 4.6 stars based on 41 reviews, suggesting a moderate level of reported satisfaction among those who have shared their experiences online. Individual results and experiences vary based on case complexity, treatment cooperation, and patient-specific factors. The practice serves the Boise area and surrounding communities in southwestern Idaho. Orthodontic treatment planning requires an in-person evaluation to assess individual dental and skeletal conditions, discuss appropriate options, and establish realistic expectations for correction.
We went to North End Orthodontics for 7 years and paid thousands of dollars only to be dismissed as patients the day before my child was to get braces because Dr. Kalange could not address an impacted tooth that he had known about for more than a year. No referral, no other explanation, no refund. I’m very disappointed, but was less than impressed with his bedside manner (he was often very curt), and we have since found a wonderful orthodontist that is able to address all of my child’s needs. If you have a child in need of orthodontic intervention I would recommend one of the many other places in the valley. It may save you from having to pay for treatments twice like I did.
Kalange put me in chronic pain and completely changed my face through an extreme retractive orthodontic treatment that started when I was only 8 years old. He also provided me with an incomplete, misleading version of my orthodontic file when I first asked for my records, in which he pretended my post-headgear and braces photos and measurements were my starting point. He did this because headgear significantly damaged my face, pushing my upper jaw back 3-4mm but pushing my chin back 6mm due to clockwise rotation (thereby lengthening my face and increasing my skeletal overbite). This caused a lot of confusion when I showed my records to other orthodontists. I had to contact him twice to get my full records, and Kalange threatened me afterward, cc'ing the American Association of Orthodontics and telling me to never contact him again. Most orthodontists develop jaws and make room for teeth when they see young children, but Kalange did the opposite. I was put in painful retractive headgear at only age 8 for over a year which was traumatizing at that age. He then had a dentist pull out my first premolars at age 12. All of this pain was forced upon me before I'd even had my first period. Overall, Kalange set back my upper jaw 3-4mm with headgear and pulled my incisors back another ~4mm with premolar extractions -- a change that is guaranteed to cause functional problems. Also, some of his ceph tracings are clearly incorrect which calls into question his competence. The study he links to below is total nonsense, as it has many design flaws and is not a randomized control trial. I was also retracted many times more than the average premolar extraction patient. My retraction from extractions alone was so extreme that a facial morph was provided before treatment when I was just 10 years old, and I remember thinking at the time "he's pulling my whole mouth back to meet my weak chin." Dr. Kalange insists my treatment was excellent by today's standards, even though retractive headgear was already hardly used when I was treated and is basically not used today. Orthodontists pretend these retractive "camouflage" treatments only happen to teenagers when it's too late to expand the jaws, but that is not true. I was actually first seen by Kalange at age 7 but no palate expander or functional appliance was offered even then. Unfortunately, retractive treatments are far more damaging when you're young and growing. Kalange told me he would have treated me the same way today because I "had too many teeth." Any orthodontist who says you have too many teeth is an idiot. Flared or crooked teeth are a jaw growth problem that can be caused by improper feeding/posture/habits (I was unfortunately bottle-fed for 3 years). It would have been easier, faster, and produced a better aesthetic result to give me a palate expander and functional appliance to grow the lower jaw. Kalange ignored my narrow intermolar width and mouth breathing in his treatment plan. Improper jaw growth is a health issue -- not just aesthetic -- and orthodontists like Kalange just make it worse. Due to Kalange's treatment, I developed sleep apnea and have spent $40k on palate expansion and orthodontics as an adult, with jaw surgery planned in 2026, which can cost up to $80k with top surgeons who are generally out of network. Adult orthodontics is rarely covered and insurance typically reimburses only very small amounts for out-of-network surgeons. I've consulted with two surgeons so far, both of whom suggested moving my upper jaw and teeth about back to where they were before I was treated by Kalange. I have been told my airway is narrowest in the tongue/soft palate area, where Kalange retracted me, which makes total sense as my symptoms started right after my orthodontic treatment ended. It doesn't matter that I only put the pieces together 20 years later -- I've been taking sleep medications since I was 16 years old. Kalange is out of touch, does not see the big picture, and has a terrible bedside manner -- please send your child elsewhere.
I have always heard this is the best orthodontist in town, and I believe it to be true! I wouldn’t go or look anywhere else. I have had two kids go through their program and one still in it. Their mouths are absolutely beautiful! The attention to detail and perfectionism is very apparent. I am so excited and grateful about the investment I made with this office. Not to mention the friends made along the way. Donna and Char are so warm and welcoming and truly a huge asset to this establishment! They keep the door revolving with smiling helping faces.
