Dr. Stephen Grussmark

I went to see Dr Grussmark for correction of my bite after developing TMD and to correct a gap in my teeth that I was not satisfied with my previous Invisalign treatment. I chose him as my orthodontist given his high reviews, expertise, and his accommodative staff. I was satisfied with my care until I came in for an IDR treatment. While I was under the understanding that I was going to have spaces between my teeth filed to give them the aesthetic appearance I wanted (we had discussed this in detail before starting my treatment), I was not made aware in advance that my front teeth would be shaved, my bottom tooth would be shaved, and the back of my front and back teeth would also be shaved on this day neither in advance or the day of the procedure. Although I completely understand that this may have been something recommended for my care, the part that concerned me was not being made aware in advance of performing the enamelplasty, but not being consented in hindsight. I am a physician, and I believe that patient autonomy is paramount in providing ethical patient care. During the procedure I asked him to stop because I developed tooth pain. When I reviewed the appearance of my smile afterwards, I was disappointed to see that my right lateral incisor was shaved down so much that it now appeared as a square shape, and looked significantly shorter than my other teeth, making my smile appear asymmetrical. The appearance, pain I felt, and the fact that I have bruxism as well, breached the level of trust I had with Dr. Grussmaark. When I spoke to Dr. Grussmark about my concerns (consent, my appearance, etc) he dismissed them, told me that the “0.2 mm difference was minimal” and that he could simply pull the tooth down/rotate it to even things out, and that “ I was making a big mistake” in reference to finding another provider, all the while not taking any accountability for the lack of informed consent. As a result of this experience, I have had to seek care from another dentists for a second opinion, and am seeing another orthodontist to continue my care, leading to increased costs and a delay in my care. I am also having to do this during a financial hardship, making this decision difficult and frustrating for me. I cannot repair the shape of my tooth to its previous appearance given the small amount removed, and now, I have to prolong my Invisalign treatment to better hide this notable asymmetry. While this “0.2mm difference” may seem a minute change to some, my smile and appearance is very personal and I had every right as a patient to decline care I wasn’t agreeable to. Informed consent is paramount in providing good patient care and is a core tenet of medical ethics.

I cannot recommend Dr. Grussmark and his team enough. After visiting several orthodontists who insisted I would need surgery, extractions, or traditional braces, Dr. Grussmark was the only one confident he could correct my severe open bite with Invisalign and he did! Thanks to him, my smile is completely transformed, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

To begin with, Dr. Grussmark’s staff are very cordial and very talented at what they do. I found his price to be very fair and competitive. Dr. Grussmark is very personable and professional and has given me excellent care and a very beautiful smile in my somewhat complicated case. Excellent staff. Everyone is attentive, helpful, responsive. Scheduling has been wonderful (easy to make appointments) and they run on-time. Dr Grussmark is the best. Kind, honest, detail-oriented, accommodating, and skilled. He truly cares about making his patients happy and creating gorgeous healthy smiles. There’s a reason he’s well-known as the best in Miami for Invisalign. I’m mid-way through treatment and highly recommend this practice.

My experience with Dr. Stephen Grussmark was good, and he is affordable too. He is an exceptional orthodontist and guides you about dental care. His staff is fantastic, and the entire team works efficiently together. Keep up the great work, guys- I would surely give their services a 10/10.
