I had been dealing with a severe toothache for over a week and decided to get it pulled just to be rid of the pain. I was referred by the Er to try Vcu dental. I was finally able to take a day off from work and go in. The visit started out ok, until it was actually time to get the extraction done. The young lady didn’t seem too knowledgeable on a few questions that I asked, but I kind of overlooked it because they are still learning! Once the procedure started, I was given three injections in my mouth to numb it, then what seemed like immediately after, the student starts the procedure. I had to stop her because I was not fully numb and was feeling everything. So I was given 3more Novocain injections and after a minute or two she started on my mouth again! This time the feeling was so terrible that my reflexes caused me to push her hand away from my mouth! So here it is again where I’m given another round of Novocain injections. By now you’d think my whole face should be Numb….But it wasn’t. I felt just about everything that was done in my mouth! This was the most traumatic experience I’ve ever had and I’ve had extractions done before in the past! After the procedure, I was sent home with no medication whatsoever! No antibiotics, No pain meds….NOTHING! The next day my face and mouth was so swollen and sore and hurt so bad, that I ended up at the Urgent care. There I was taken care of like I should’ve been at Vcu. Even the doctor that attended to me was confused as to why I wasn’t sent home with meds! I’ve never had a dental experience like this! And to this day, I still have numbness and tingling in my face! I’m only giving a one star review because I can’t give it ZERO! Never again will I go here, Nor will I refer anyone to them!
The VCU Dental School is amazing and seeing these students learn as they go and work together is awesome. I have been going to this school for years now and have enjoyed all the individuals I encountered. However, I think it is safe to say the parking for the dental school is horrendous. It takes me 10 minutes to arrive in the city of Richmond to the deck at VCU, but it can take as long as an hour or more to find parking. The parking is a nightmare. If you schedule an appointment allow a good 2 hours to get to the deck and pray you find a parking place.
I was referred here by my dentist not realizing it was a teaching dental school.Honestly the service was better then my original dentist. The empathy and care calmed me down through some rather difficult extractions. The breathing exercises especially really helped me through the needle pain. The parking is challenging unless you come early.
I have had nothing but positive experiences at VCU Dental Care. The doctors are great listeners and competent at what they do. Likewise, the techs/assistants are knowledgeable. The front desk girl I encountered today was SO SO nice and helpful! I would recommend anyone, with any sort of dental issues, give them a try.
I tried for over 9 months to get an appointment, including waiting for the first of the month and calling as soon as they opened. When I finally did get an opportunity to speak to someone they told me I'd hear back about scheduling but they never called or reached out, I was completely ghosted. It's now 2 months later and luckily I found a great dentist but I wish I'd never wasted my time. If you have medicaid find an actual dentist that accepts your insurance and do not bother with VCU, I waited so long for help I ended up losing an entire tooth.
