I had a consultation with Dr. Iwei Huang regarding a jaw issue. The experience was excellent from start to finish. Dr. Huang was extremely kind, attentive, and professional. He carefully evaluated my situation, explained everything in a clear and honest way, and reassured me that my case is not critical and does not require treatment or surgery at this time. I really appreciated that he did not try to push any unnecessary procedures and was very straightforward about when intervention is actually needed. It’s rare to meet a doctor who is both highly knowledgeable and genuinely ethical. I felt listened to, respected, and confident in his opinion. Highly recommend Dr. Huang to anyone looking for an honest and professional orthodontic consultation.
I came in to get a sense of whether this office would be a good fit for braces, knowing that online reviews can be misleading. Before my initial visit, I called more than 48 hours in advance to ask about rescheduling and was told I would be charged $250 if I didn’t keep the appointment, so I came in despite it being during the workday. The front office staff was professional, which I appreciated. However, my experience with the dentist was extremely disappointing. I shared my frustration with the lack of flexibility—especially around Friday appointments—and asked clarifying questions about the cancellation policy and what scheduling would realistically look like as a patient. My questions were repeatedly brushed off with “this visit is complimentary,” without actually addressing what I was asking. The dentist’s tone came across as condescending, and while I maintained my composure, the interaction felt dismissive and unwelcoming. As a woman of color, this mattered. Respect, clear communication, and being taken seriously are baseline expectations in healthcare, and I did not feel that here. Ultimately, the visit was a waste of time. The office was also very difficult to find, adding to the frustration of stepping away from work for an appointment that provided little useful information. I left without my questions answered and with no confidence in moving forward as a patient.
Unprofessional and Condescending Doctor Despite Excellent Staff I noted on my intake form that I have medical‑office anxiety, and I even mentioned it verbally when I arrived. I’m an attorney who has practiced in medical malpractice, so I naturally get anxious in clinical settings. Despite being upfront about this, I was treated poorly for no reason other than showing signs of anxiety. The doctor was unnecessarily rude and aggressive toward me, seemingly because he didn’t like that I was asking questions. The front desk staff and the dental assistant were extremely professional, and honestly, I suspect they warned him about my concerns, because he walked into the room already defensive and condescending. He spoke to me in a pretentious, dismissive tone and couldn’t explain basic information in a way a patient could understand. He kept using medical terminology without breaking anything down, and when I asked for a visual example, he insisted there were no pictures of cases like mine — even though my situation is extremely common (spaced teeth and an overbite). I finally had to ask him to simply Google it, which he hadn’t even thought to do. Meanwhile, the dental assistant maintained her professionalism the entire time, even as he smirked and acted irritated. The contrast between her behavior and his was stark. He came across as someone who may be book smart but lacks basic communication skills and common sense when interacting with patients. Read the other bad reviews, I’m not the only one. And it is unfortunate because I live in Gold Coast and now have to find another dentist
I can only hope that in writing this review, I can convince you to go anywhere else for orthodontic care. I wish I had. I came in with 3 problem teeth - I had previously had braces, but after some facial trauma, was no longer able to wear my retainers, and some teeth moved. I wanted Invisalign, but Dr. Huang convinced me to get braces. To fix THREE teeth? He said it would be faster and more precise. Okay, fine. Not fine. I spent over two years in braces, including a 6+ month stretch where Dr. Huang did not change the wire at all, insisting that “it needs to move more.” Spoiler alert: nothing moved after the first month of having that wire in. He re-started my suresmile plan three times (including three sets of scans), each time claiming that it wasn’t his fault that the plan was incorrect. My problem teeth had moved slightly, but many other teeth had moved too - in the wrong directions. When I asked him if we could just quit the suresmile stuff and have him do it himself, he basically admitted to being incapable of that, saying that he is unable to offer anything other than the suresmile plan (wires bent by robots). ….. Then what was the dental school degree with additional orthodontics training for? I finally got sick of his crap and requested to get my braces removed - at which point I witnessed (multiple times) staff members whispering and pointing at me, then laughing when they realized I was looking at them. Unbelievably disappointing experience, and my teeth are still not what I wanted, after 2+ years and thousands of dollars. I should have gotten Invisalign, and you should not go to Gold Coast Orthodontics.
This is only based off of a consultation, but I had a good experience. The office is in the same building as Neiman Marcus (enter on the Chicago side). The waiting room was clean and quiet and I only had to wait ~5 minutes before being brought in to do the intake. Dr. Huang and his assistant were awesome — super thorough and spent a lot of time answering questions and explaining things really well. It was clear that they were both extremely knowledgeable. I didn't feel pressured and they were clear, when I asked, about what next steps were and even gave me a ballpark range for cost. Ultimately, I am not certain I'm going to move forward with the treatment (since it's elective yet extensive) but if I do, I wouldn't hesitate to come back to Dr. Huang and his team.
